I am dating an Egyptian Arab and pretty much everyone I talk to about him freaks out because he is Arab. What is the big deal??? Why in 2007 do we still have such stereotypes? I have been told he will use me and leave me as soon as he can. I feel true love for him. So I am wondering, can you all correct my thinking in this. Why do people not like Arabs?

It's nice that you love him. But have you learned about his religion? It has a few principles that he may want to carry out on you:

Death for apostasy:
Sura 4:89: "They but wish that ye should reject Faith, as they do, and thus be on the same footing (as they): But take not friends from their ranks until they flee in the way of Allah (From what is forbidden). But if they turn renegades, seize them and slay them wherever ye find them; and (in any case) take no friends or helpers from their ranks.”

Kill Disbelievers in a cruel fashion:
Sura 5:33: "The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His messenger and strive to make mischief in the land is that they should be murdered or crucified or their hands and their feet should be cut off on opposite sides or they should be imprisoned; this shall be as a disgrace for them in this world, and in the hereafter they will have an awful doom."

Slit throats of unbelievers:
Quran Sura 47:4:
Now when ye meet in battle those who disbelieve, smite at their necks; until when you have overcome them, bind a bond firmly (on them): thereafter (is the time for) either generosity or ransom: Until the war lays down its burdens. Thus (are ye commanded): but if it had been Allah's Will, He could certainly have exacted retribution from them (Himself); but (He lets you fight) in order to test you, some with others. But those who are slain in the Way of Allah,- He will never let their deeds be lost.

Hey Sarita,

Well look, 1st it's how you feel being with him, do you love him? does he love you? if so, let people's thoughts out of this relationship, it's not worth it.

Arabs here in the states are regarded as closed minded, stubborn, selfish and reckless "after sep11 it's even worst"

When they are displayed on our Tvs, they are usually giving a threat to the Us from a cave.
Portraing a race in such a way, gives people the wrong impressions and especially those whom are not well educated or too busy doing other things.

With all the events going on now, it's even more.
I've met a lot of people from a lot of races, I still can't say that a certain race is superior to another, in doing so, it shows plain ignorance and illetiracy.

Remember, take only what you find useful from people's thoughts, let go of the rest as it might put more strain on the relationship and make you overanalyze things.

it doesen't matter where someone is from, good and bad exits in every race.

Thanks for taking the time to read this

God bless

P.S: from an arabic Guy. Ma a Salama

Just because it's a stereotype doesn't mean it isn't true.

Arabs do not share the same basic values of western cultures. I have seen many American women who married an Arab and then found themselves being beaten for wearing shorts on a 100 degree day.

The Arabs can put up with it while they are trying to win you over, but sooner or later they revert to their real beliefs.

In my experience, although I hate to use "stereotypes" , I've found a majority of Arab people don't keep their houses, cars, or even selves very clean. I've also found many to be rude in stores but I would never not give any individual a chance. I have an Arab neighbor that purposely plowed down a Canadian Goose crossing the street. The poor thing's neck was hanging and bleeding while it's mate watched. He did not even flinch when I screamed at him about it. Hopefully your family will give him a chance, make yourself happy and don't worry about what other people think. I've found many Arabs to be quite attractive and very nice people to work and socialize with.

I would guess the history of what happened, people are just scared of them in general. Yes, it's 2007... but I mean, as time passes new stereotypes will be born. It's hard to imagine a place without stereotypes.

If you really love your boyfriend, then it shouldn't matter at all if nobody around you likes him. You two are the only ones that matter in the relationship.

Because people stereotype people of Middle Eastern descent ever since 9/11, the Madrid bombings, the London bombings, the Paris riots, and the protests over the pictures of Muhammad in the Danish newspapers, months after they were published. It’s far easier to see a group of people in a negative light when some of their members act badly, as opposed to thinking that maybe those are the exception as opposed to the rule for the rest of the people in a particular group.
If this guy is as great as you think, most of the people that you care about will come around to your viewpoint. Anyway, if this guy is as great as you think, it shouldn’t really matter what they think.

HUh... Because of 9/11 and many other things.
I like them and I have many arab friends the problem is that the media is making al of them look like terorist. But just do what you gotta do and don't care about what people think because the world is too short.

because that's just how most people are. people stereotype and are racist. it's in their nature. people are afraid of arabs because that's how they were taught. the media and government teaches us that arabs are bad people. what some arabs have done have given all arabs a bad name and now people have it fused in their mind that ALL arabs are bad, just because of a select few. instead of getting to know each person for who they are, mst people judge others how they look, especially by their race. the world today is just evil and full of hate. the only thing you can do is try to be the best person you can be:)

I don't have a problem with all Arabs...only the ones that want to kill us. Now, if he does use you and leave you (and I hope he doesn't) is that because he's an Arab? I doubt it. Arabs don't have the corner market on hurting people.
