I love an well done fish tank. My kid's peditrician has two and I could sit and watch them for hours.
If I had the space, money and time I would have one at home.
So no, they are are not tacky if they are done right.

Relaxing, but maybe corny. If my tooth was killing me, I wouldn't want a loud TV blaring, or wind chimes that's for sure. My dentist has magazines only. How about two LCD screens - a fire and tropical fish, one on each wall? And for sure you need something on every wall - your patients can't catch someone's eye & smile 'cause they don't want to, yet! You do need something to look at. A hypnotic mobile? A projector with alternating images?
And overhead would be great - something calming or intricate to take your mind off the surgery being performed : )

I don't find them tacky in anyway.....I have a hundred gallon aquarium set up in my living room...three fifty gallon tanks spread out around the house and a fish pond with a waterfall in my backyard.......I love watching all the fish.......very calming....and with the right equipment easy to take care of and maintain......
I think they are beautiful.....a living picture........

They're not tacky. And often they're not that cheap. They have to pay for somebody to take care of them because they're normally salt water type ones.I prefer to watch a bunch of pretty fish to some stupid show with people screaming at each other or Barney singing.

Well if the tank was poorly maintained and was left to build up clutter and dirt, then i would agree, but if you put some exotic fish then i think it could look good. But it never hurts to also add a tv.

No way, just keep it clean, free of fish smell. It would be very soothing and relaxing to watch the fish, much better than TV.
