Unfortunately, most time it is due to pilot error.
Weather and mechanical reasons play a part as well.
Take a look at the nall report for more detail regarding General aviation accidents.http://www.aopa.org/asf/publications/

The same thing that makes rain drops fall from the sky also makes planes fall out of the sky.. commonly referred to as "gravity".

Most airplanes safely land but for those that experience "uncontrolled landings";

1. Pilot error

2. Bad weather

3. Mechanical failures

The technology is available to have planes flown by computer only.. doing away with pilots all together.

Pilots would like to know what are you going to do with that plane in flight when there is an equipment failure? Call a passenger forward?

Does this info help any?

unfortunately and most sadly, mostly pilot error and maintanence error... though it makes up a large part of the reason why planes crash, it is Human Error. though how strict strict regulations are, there is bound to be Human Error...

in the past, there were also some attempts by airline companies to cut costs, such as during recessions or economic downturn... those factors are also important.

Hope this helps, Peace.

hey, you ever heard of GRAVITY? !!! ok, way too funny answers people, this should be on Jay Leno. El.p,,,you need an ELT, a proctologist might find your brain, seriously, aircraft do experience failures, and noboby dies flying, only crashing !! now ,,,ask your self,,,why does it hurt when you "crash" your toe in to a leg on your coffe table !!??? AND JUST WHAT WAS THE CAUSE ???read the answers above..some are accurate, some are so generously comedic, you get my ,,,best question vote !!!!

Many reasons such as: Pilot error, bad weather creating low visibility and icing of the wings, mechanical, electrical, engine issues and failures, acts of war and terrorism, birds flying into the engines or windsheilds of aircraft, collisions of 2 aircrafts not properly routed in flight, not being able to land in an emergency and forced to crash land, landing with out gear and not able to control aircraft can cause a ground collision or crash.

well there are many possible things that can happen to an airplane to make it crash such as engine failure, lack of fuel to the engine, hydraulic failure, design error(meaning a part might not have been put in properly or not have put in at all)the engines may flame out, jet engines sometimes cannot be re lit,on bored computer failure, lack of controls to the flaps, loss of power to the cabin and engines, and bad weather, lack of thrust and the list goes on and on I'm just saying what i know

They usually crash due to a COMBINATION of any of these factors: Design flaws....Weather...or Pilot error. It is usually at least two reasons under one ore more of those catagories. One exception is TERRORISM. That one doesn't need any other aggravating factors. It will bring a plane down in and of itself. Other than cases of terrorism, You will see multipul factors involved in nearly all plane crashes. jason

Well, there are a few different reasons. First, if they breakdown, they can`t just stay up there, so they`ll come down. Sometimes the pilot might do something wrong, there could be a fire, terrorrists (AKA pysco murderers), a million different mechanical problems....

I wouldn`t worry about it if you`re going on a plane though. You have a MUCH better chance of dying in a car crash.

They do not maintain adequate lift from the wings, Once air speed drops, lift drops, and then the plan drops.
There are two main reason for this to happen. 1) Mechanical failure, which could get into millions of possibilities. 2) Pilot error, which again could be many different reasons.

My, such a seemingly simple question, but it covers an extremely complex subject. Most aircraft accidents involve a series of small errors, each compounding the last, culminating in an accident. Causal factors can include mechanical failure(s) (rare), adverse weather, errors in judgment and/or calculations, and, often, a combination of two or more causes.
