Do they? The only people I know with back problems are very tall - and very thin. Self-conscious about their height. They stoop a lot.

If anyone is more sedentary, they might have back problems, and if that's because they are too heavy, they might be less active or have bad posture. But they might also welcome being obese as a refuge from public attention. Or maybe they wear their clothes too tightly!

I think it's a mistake to generalise, though. Women, even when pregnant, have a different centre of gravity. Anyone can be fit and healthy and overweight. Anyone can find one fault in a person, but that may not be the cause of their illness.

It's more than just the extra weight. It's also a measure of HOW that weight is carried. When most of it is in the belly, it throws the person's center of balance forward. That's why it's easier and more comfortable to carry something like a backpack or a baby on a person's back as opposed to on the stomach. As the center of balance is moved forward, the body accomidates this by displacing the lower back forward as well. This displacement put the extra strain on the lower back, and this results in an increased incidence of low-back pain/problems.

It probably has to do something with the fact that women with larger breasts also have lower back problems. What I've heard it results from is the fact that, the more weight you have on your chest or front of you has to be balanced somehow to retain your sense of gravity, usually by leaning slightly backwards, a bit more than if you dropped the weight or had smaller breasts. This constant angle of your spine probably puts stress on the vertebrae, resulting in lower back problems.

All of the extra weight that an obese person carries is normally around the abdomen and stomach. The lower back is strained in having to carry the extra weight and keep the body upright.

It would seem that an obese person would have trouble with proper body mechanics for one thing. Besides that, any extra weight puts more pressure on everything, including the back.

it could be the fact that they have so much weight on them that it's too much for the lower back to handle. since a thin person doesnt have much weight as a obese one, theres no problems

Extra weight compresses the spine. It can cause a disc to rupture or bulge. Think of it this way..If you carried around a 50 lb bag of dog food all day everyday, the added weight would hurt your back eventually.
