How long do airborne Germs survive?

and whats the best way to repel them? Say a family member is sick with the flu, (s)he sleeps on the couch all day watching TV. how long will it take for said couch to become disinfected? And what would the chances of catching it be if another member of the family were to sit on the couch immediately afterwords?

any additional information on this subject would be appreciated.

it depends on the germ, some last only minutes outside the body while others last for hours, it depends on the virus, check online to find the specific germ and it's life span.
