Cut a V shape in the middle of the toe nail. Guaranteed results.

Best thing to do is go see a foot doctor (podiatrist) and have the ingrown toenail removed. It will keep growing into the skin (that is wht causes the pain) and the self-surgery can actually make this conditon worse.

It's a simple procedure that I have done on mine. They numb the toe really well, then make a slice in the affected nail and remove it. Its not totally painless, but it doesnt hurt that badly and I was never off my feet -- went back to work the next day. Have is dont on a Friday and he can stay off it over the weekend if needed and be ready for work on Monday.

Best of luck!

Soaking the toe does help. My dad had an ingrown toenail, and the doctor told him to soak it for 5 minutes in the morning and at night. He also had to slide dental floss under the corner of the nail to get it to separate from the skin (sounds gross, I know). If you do this daily, it should grow out. Cutting the toenail straight across usually prevents them. I would recommend he see a doctor, though, just to make sure it doesn't get too infected.

I had one several years ago and ended up needing "surgery", which really wasn't bad and ended quickly - outpatient. The only thing that hurt very badly was the injection to numb the toe. I would advise that he go see a doctor, since he is risking infecting the area when he tries to treat it himself. He may not even need surgery, but a doctor would be able to tell him what the best option is to fix the problem.
Hope it gets better.

I thought for ingrown toenails you have to cut them straight across, but I'm not positive.

When I was younger I got them regularly and my grandma always cut a V in the middle of my nail (not too short). It healed it up every time.
