Before homes had adequate heating and when they had to go out to the outhouses to take a dump... pee... They would not want to take off their pjs. The easy access flap in the rear allowed you to expose the necessary parts to take care of business (without freezing). I had three pair of 'cat in the hat pjs' (they were striped and had a 'trap' or opening) when I was a kid. I wish I still had some... I don't think that they even make them anymore.
