While this does seem like one possible option, it has some drawbacks. First, the Sunnis have representatives within the democratically elected government of Iraq. We can not claim to support this government while at the same time attacking part of its members. Second, our biggest Arab ally is Saudi Arabia, which is a Sunni State. If we were to adopt a blatantly biased policy against Sunnis, it could have detrimental effects on our friendship with Saudi Arabia. Third, such a policy will invoke the wrath of Sunnis throughout the world; more than our current policy already has.

If we pull out and let the Shiites and Sunnis duke it out, it'll lead to international catastrophe.
They don't care about civilians and such, there'll be massacres and extreme violence.
Iran will back the Shiites, Saudi Arabia the Sunnis. They'll go and butt heads in Iraq, probably bringing other Middle Eastern countries into the fray. It could cause a massive conflict spanning the Middle East, part of South Asia, and possibly North Africa.
Oil prices will soar, economies based on oil and gasoline will hurt greatly.
And all because of us. We shouldn't be there, but we can't pull out until... I don't know.

Well that is the Catch 22. The Sunni's are supported by Al Quada and the Saudis in addition they also were the Sadam supporters, so they just want to make the place a mess. The Shiites are supported by Iran and Hammas, they opposed Sadam and are the majority and control the government. But there are also Shiite miltias that are directly supported by the Iranians and have tried to destablize the government so they can gain control.

because they have been warring for the past several hundred years; its never going to end. However, we have no business being there. Since we have been there 80% of the students have dropped out of the universities there, todays students will probably be tomorrow's insurgents. And they'll blame us; the next generation of our country will be faced with even worse conflict than we are now, so we need to pull out.

They must somehow learn to work together. The militias that are not loyal to the government need to be disarmed so instead of a civil war they will have a simple political division like the U.S. has.

Because the Shia is backed by Iran and Syria. As they said in "Oh, Brother" "we're in a tight place".
