I have an entertainment center that is very close to the fireplace. There is no other place to move it to, and it gets a bit hot when the fireplace is on. Is there some kind of furniture cover or other product that would protect the wood from the heat?

Actually yes--it's called a fireplace screen, which is a platter made of wood installed on a post attached to legs. It's generally an antique, though you can make one yourself or find one on ebay. Another thing you can do is make one out of glass; I made one for a friend of mine who is VERY contemporary and it looks awesome.

I read they're not effective because cold air can come inside the chimney while the flume is open and you're burning wood. I'm sure as long as you have logs lit it's better than nothing. I don't think you could only get by with a fireplace though. You may want to supplement space heaters along with the fireplaces.

Distance....DO NOT USE OIL!!!! (for heat protection)
The oil will heat to a higher degree than wood, damaging the wood.
Also, "most" oils are flammable.

Wood will expand and contract with hot/cold temperatures. Eventually the wood will dry out & start to crack & maybe warp?

Look for an attractive barrier as the one mentioned above, or create distance.

My husbands boss just lost his entire house to fire due to the same type of situation. It is just not worth it. Quit using the fireplace until you can put more distance between it and your furniture.

Distance and a good oil are the best bet. With distance being the most important.
