On MS Word when making a table, how do I get the little checkboxes?

On the View menu, point to Toolbars, and then click Forms.
On the Forms toolbar, click Check Box Form Field

When you come to the symbol dialog box, be sure to click the down arrow and select a box from a font which is universally used, like monotype sorts, arial, wingdings. If you don't, and you open the file on another computer which does not have the same font, you may get a different character.
