Kinda , you have to monitor what files you download cuz sometimes u get like 20 min songs when their really suppose to be 3 min and thats a virus. But once u monitor what u download and have a sensible anti virus ur cool I've been using it for years now and haven't had a crash ever.

As long as you have a good antivirus, antispyware, and firewall & monitor what you download, you should be fine. I would like to add that if you cannot easily distinguish between viruses and non-viruses, do NOT download a program of any kind. It could be a virus with the filename 'Windows Vista' or whatever you would download. By the way, this is illegal if you download copyrighted files like Windows Vista and most songs.

limewire is a shared kind of network, so it is not exactly safe, but if you have the right protection for your pc, like antivirus software, you can be safe in downloading files from limewire.
