Adult stem cells are more developed and are multipotent--which means they have the ability to function as many, but not all, different types of cells. Embryonic stem cells have matured less and are totipotent--which means they have the ability to function as almost any type of cell. Embryonic stem cells are more flexible than adult stem cells and can be kept in an undifferentiated state for longer.

However, there is less controversy over harvesting adult stem cells than harvesting embryonic stem cells.
