I use public transportation to get to work everyday. It can't be avoided that sometimes a person would sit beside be who smells bad. What should I do that is not overly rude? Should I just do nothing, cover my nose with my hand or handkerchief? spray perfume on myself? sit somewhere else?

You can't avoid those people, even though you say something to the person next to you because its useless! The following day you will encounter again people who is like that and you will say something that is not nice or sounds like your just concerned but they will NOT accept it. Don't put yourself in trouble some people who use public transportation are always in the fight mood. The only thing that you Will do just find another sits and like what you said, just cover your nose and spray your favourite cologne on it.

It is public transport, wich means we are on a train/ bus with a bunch of people we don't know. Call me crazy, but I really don't care what a smelly stranger thinks of my manners-if he thinks i am rude for moving oh well. I get up and move. It's actually like doing him a favor because if enough people move away from the person-maybe they will get the hint that something is wrong and try bathing.

You should not say a word nor make rude motions to let the person know he or she stinks for 3 good reasons.1-if their mother was unable to teach them how to bathe then anything you say wont work.2-they might have a body odor that they just can not help.I known people to take a shower, use soap and deodarent and come out smelling like if they have not showered in weeks.3-The person could have a mental illness and you saying anything could cause the person to be less self confident leading to never bathing or showering. The best thing to do is politely excuse yourself and sit elsewhere.

Make sure you carry a small vial of perfume or if you can get one of those compacts with solid perfume so you can flick it PRONTO if needed and you can take a whiff to calm yourself, better yet save some money to buy a good used vehicle that will transport you to and from work!

If you can, sit somewhere else. If not, breathe through your mouth and ignore it. Why? Because no matter what you tell them, they can't do anything about it and they will still stink. Except that they will be stinky AND angry, so just stick with stinky and calm.

I keep a little spray bottle of OUST air freshener for just these occasions. I just take it out of my purse, aim the nozzle in the direction of the offender (not at their face) and spray. I say nothing. Many people wink at me and seem to know why I did it.

Bring a clothespin that doesn't hurt or a nose plug for swimming, and act like you are going to throw up. People will get the hint.

Carry some Vicks VapoRub with you - use it under your nose, that is if you can stand the smell of the Vicks.

It does not happen every day, so, why worry about it? Next time, sit somewhere else.
