I prefer to be just friends. I might call and I might not. We could go out once in a while. But, I might call at the last minute and cancel. You would not mind. Would you?

i think it would be ok. friends are not obligated to call and check in every day, nor are they on a leash. if i had a friend that got upset when i didn't call every day i would have no friends at all. the very nature of a friendship is that you hang out when you are both available and have no work or family obligation, or when it is convenient for you both. the time you do spend together is spent because you have things in common and enjoy spending some time with like minded people. i have had times when i had to call at the last minute and take a rain check because some work or family thing came up and it should be ok. there have been times when i didn't feel up to going out and said so, my friends have the same option, they are friends.

yes. that is the definition of friends, all right. It is the way girlfriends do their friendships. As long as you make this totally plain to a woman, she can be very comfortable with it. IF she has a crush on you, though, she will continually be seeking you to love her exclusively.
Some phrase like "I'm still busy trying to find my place in the World. I'm not looking for someone to love right now." are good tamers, and her reactions will be her own, not something she can blame you for. But it has to be right away so she doesn't create a mental fantasy about you being the ONE.

If you want a girl as "just a friend" then treat them like a friend.
...My friends do not stand me us, but will call me at the last minute for an invite.
...most love affairs start out as just friends, so take your time and get to know a person before becoming more than friends, your girl "friends" will respect you for it!..:) and you can only win with this type of morality.

There is nothing more frustrating than being stood up. Sure it can happen once or twice, but you can not make a regular habit of it. The most important thing is that both sides agree, however, on what level of friendship and/or commitment they want.

Some girls would say you are playing games and messing with their mind. Just don't say things you don't mean and make promises you can't keep and then all will be ok.
