This is a very tough call. I would have gone with the Macbook before they upgraded to the intel chip and screwed up there wireless system. So i would probally go with the Xp with express upgrade to Vista. But one thing would be for sure is I would wait to install vista untill they have all there drivers in place. And work out some of the bugs. I would just get the XP unit. I used to love macs untill they started to get sloppy.

If you are a windows user... (past or present) and have not used Mac before then I suggest you are always better of with Vista.
Howevers Macs are faster and have better security.
However Vista is more recent. Also if you plan to use it for work . education the chances are they will use Windows to which it is very expensive to make an Apple mac compatable.
I could go on forever...
Psersonally I would love to say get the Vista but you have to do the research. Plus at the moment I am sure Vista is full of bugs as it has only just been released.

The Mac, hands down.
1. User friendliness. All the tools you need are at your fingertips. Everything is intuitive. No more going to the Start menu to search for what you need.
2. Virus protection. Macs are immune to viruses and spyware. You don't even need Norton.
3. Stability. Mac's OS is Unix-based. Never crashes. Never breaks down. No SNAFUs. No more tearing out your hair at lost files or e-mails. Don't even bother with an extended warranty.
4. In addition to the clunkiness and the vulnerability factors of Microsoft, you'll have to deal with the bugs of Vista's first release. I've used both platforms for years and would not take a MS system as a gift!

Vista requires state of the art hardware, and is not available for wide release until 1/31/2007. That being said, there's likely to be several bugs within the product. I would stick with XP until Vista is stable, if you choose to go the PC route.
If you are doing lots of multi-media work, I would recommend the Mac with OS X. I think that the Mac is better suited for with with graphics, video, and music.
I hope this helps.

It depends on so many things...
what will you be using your computer for?
the mac is really alot easier to use and it usually gets far fewer viriuses as most are targeted towards windows.
XP on the other hand is probably a better choice if you already have alot of software that is not compatible with the mac.
No need to purchase all the other stuff you are comfortable with if you stay with the upgrade.
Compare prices too.
I would think that the mac would be more expensive (comparing the same items) since there are less people competing for market share in manufacturing of it.
GOOD LUCK

XP, and skip the vista upgrade until microsoft can work out the bugs. I'm comfortable with XP, and I don't see any need to rush to vista just because it's the new OS on the block..

i would suggest u go for a TOSHIBA laptop which comes with 1 plus 2 year (international warrinty)... It comes with the original version of Windows XP... Pls don't go for Mac,if ur going to use in India... becaues there is no much of people to help you in case if u have any problem with the Mac... on the other side u might be a regular user of Windows XP... so have a some personal knowledge abt the sys.... Widow Vista is going to hit only at the end of july... so its definitly gonna be big hit.. Window XP is the BEST
