The Chinese were horrified by how swiftly the American Military was able to take apart the Iraqi Army. They clearly understood if we were so inclined we could carve them up like a Christmas turkey. This is just there way of saying they have the means to fight back.
Its really nothing new. It is known that the Soviets had the same technology. It is rumored that the U.S. has similar anti-satellite weapons that can be launched from fighter planes. We are way ahead in space, so if it comes to an arms race we'll win. But you probably not be watching it on CNN this time, with the satelites knocked out.
Might open the door for the installation of anti ballastic missle weapons in space. That would be a good thing.

That means that you've got nowhere to hide. A missile launched from space can hit any target on earth. So, it doesn't matter where you go. A missile can always follow you.
Last year, the Chinese initiated talks with the U.S., presenting a proposal to ban the use of space for deployment of offensive weapons, and for space to be used only for peaceful purposes. However, Mr. Bush totally rejected the idea, then stated that the U.S. has the right to use space for whatever purpose that will serve U.S. interests.
Now, as the recent Chinese events unfolded, it is clear that Mr. Bush had made another faulty foreign policy decision. Ironically, the policy makers in Washington are now crying foul and condemning the Chinese actions.
Now, who's really to blame if the militarization of space escalates out of control?.

(4) The U.S. Constitution does not adequately define "arms". When it was adopted, "arms" included muzzle-loaded muskets and pistols, swords, knives, bows with arrows, and spears. However, a common- law definition would be "light infantry weapons which can be carried and used, together with ammunition, by a single militiaman, functionally equivalent to those commonly used by infantrymen in land warfare." That certainly includes modern rifles and handguns, full-auto machine guns and shotguns, grenade and grenade launchers, flares, smoke, tear gas, incendiary rounds, and anti-tank weapons, but not heavy artillery, rockets, or bombs, or lethal chemical, biological or nuclear weapons. Somewhere in between we need to draw the line. The standard has to be that "arms" includes weapons which would enable citizens to effectively resist government tyranny, but the precise line will be drawn politically rather than constitutionally. The rule should be that "arms" includes all light infantry weapons that do not cause mass destruction. If we follow the rule that personal rights should be interpreted broadly and governmental powers narrowly, which was the intention of the Framers, instead of the reverse, then "arms" must be interpreted broadly in other words, arms comes from the word firearms

Space is militarized to only a limited extent at the moment. Primary military applications in space are spy satellites. The recent demonstration by China that it can target satellites in orbit means that it can potentially disrupt military and civilian communications, and intelligence in the event of war. It also means that they may be able to disable parts of our missile defense shield once it is fully operational.
These are bargaining chips. They probably conducted this test so they can bring us to the table, ask us for something they want in exchange for not continuing to test these weapons.

Space Arms Race! Wow thats old words to hear and read again!!
There is no race for space, China and any other country more dedicated to spending money and having a desire to be the best can do it. Why should we stop innovation!!
Just remember building the mouse trap is one thing, catching the mouse is another.

Paranoia, that's for sure. About everyone around us. More tension in diplomatic relationships. Possibly more wars. Lots of things.
