Yes it is a problem.I don't let my kids around smokers or in houses of smokers. You are not paranoid. You are talking about the health of your child and that is more important than those who live beneath you. My advice is look for another place to live that is smoke free. Second hand smoke can cause illness just the same as first hand smoke.I have a friend who works with the health care of children and she told me it take a minimum of 3 days for a house to be smoke free enough for children to go there. Your house is not smoke free at all.It is in everything, including your child's toys. Hope things work out for you.Good Luck

No I dont think you are being paranoid because its not just the smoke that can be harmful to your baby but the thousands of chemicals in the air when the smoke is burned. Instead of moving I strongly suggest you buy an air cleaner..there is on here and it literally sucks the smoke right up and takes the smell completely out of the air..if you put one of those in your home it may make a huge difference, i know it does in mine. you can buy one from sears its called an console air cleaner..and its great...also it is with electronic coiling cell.

I highly doubt your children are at any risk.
Other than the offensive smell there is no worry.
Second hand smoke exposure risks are really not nearly as scary as the news reports make it out to be.
If anyone is interested in real facts about this it is very easily found on the internet.
Its all in the 'numbers' so to speak.
Lets say..100 people smoke. Of those 100 perhaps 1 will die of lung cancer (actually numbers are MUCH less ---166 out of 100,000 vs 100 out of 100,000 non-smokers.) Now, lets say you hear a report...
people exposed to Second hand smoke 100% more likely to die...
in real numbers that would be TWO people died out of 100. Pretty small risk, eh?
I am in NO way endorsing smoking-it is a filthy habit in my opinion. What I think is worse though-manipulation of science just to make scary headlines.
Smoking DOES kill...however, the actual numbers compared to all other deaths just don't tell the truth all the time.

as a parent, I will have to say yes that the smoke of your neighbors will affect your daughter and also you because it is considered "second hand" smoke!
according to local doctors, where I live, they people who get second hand smoke have the likelyhood to die and the lungs
do begin to get black as can be.
my highest recommendation to you is this: discretely look for a new apartment where the tennants do not smoke and if you like that place then move into that place and saw good bye to the neighbors who like to smoke very well.
that is my sincere reply.

if i were in your situation and i was financially able to move, then i would move, thats really the only solution because the land lord cant tell your neighbors that they cant smoke, and yes, it can affect your child, especially if it is as strong as you say. if you cant move, maybe try running the fan in the bathroom if you have one, i know its small but it does help (i used to have smoking neighbors). also if it is not too cold you could crack open some windows to ventilate a little.

Everyone's told second-hand smoke causes cancer and increased heart disease. No one remembers the studies. Only those subjected to HEAVY concentrations of smoke over many years showed an increase in health problems. Career waitresses in smoke filled bars were one example. We're talking bars with smoke so thick you can't see the back wall. The exhaust on the freeway is more harmful to your little girl.

Nowadays it is getting to be a major problem where ever we go and the worse part of it is that the smokers don't know that it is illegal and dangerous to one's health.
my recommendation is: to either consult with the landlord but firmly or you can leave out of rental buiding.
who needs smokers anyhow? do certainly do not need them!!!
contantly you should think positive.

Get a air purifier like the Ionic Pro or the Ionic Breeze. If they won't stop, this will at least help with the air.

if it is just the smell in there then it won't affect children but if they are around your child smoking in front of her then second-hand smoking will affect her but just them being in the basement and not around her won't harm her

talk to your pediatrician.
if you can smell the smoke in your house, then it is a problem.
I did not allow my children to be around smokers either.
Your doctor will be able to ease your mind.
