I have my spacers and I'm getting braces in 6 days. I just want to know what they will be doing when they are putting them on so there are no surprises.

If you need to know, I'm getting top and bottom at the same time.

This is what happened when I had mine put on, from what I can remember (top and bottom).

First, they make you brush your teeth with what basically feels like sand and water. It's to get all of the stuff off your teeth really well so that the glue sticks. Then, they put a large circular piece of plastic in your mouth to hold your lips wide open so that they don't touch your teeth. It's kind of uncomfortable, but you get ued to it. They then use a metal tool to basically scrape your teeth free of anything you missed with the toothbrush. Then you wait until your teeth are completely dry. They hurry the process by using a little pump thing that blows air (like a turkey baster). They also squirted some fluid on my teeth (I don't know what this was for - probably to help the glue again). Then, for the front teeth, they put the glue on and then each little brace. one by one. For the back ones, they put glue around your teeth and then use a little tapping tool to tap the back braces (which wrap all the way around your molars) onto the tooth. Then you wait and wait and wait for the glue to dry. Its actually only like 20 minutes but it feels longer. then they take the metal wires which are very thin and put them in place. After that, they apply tiny rubber bands (which are pretty much the same thing as spacers if you have a chance to look) to hold the wires in place.

It feels really weird for a while but trust me, you'll get used to it. Personally, I disliked the spacers more. Sometimes the braces will fall off/break off and then they replace it. Just be very very careful eating hard food, like bread with hard crust and apples). The back of the wire also sometimes pokes into your gums, which hurts. You'll eventually get used to it.

They will first put a bunch of cotton in your mouth to dry it out. You'll have to sit there and wait until your mouth is dry enough for them to begin putting the braces on.

They will take a little brush with glue on it and apply the glue to your teeth. They will attach the braces (a few pieces at a time) and use a tool to dry them and make sure they adhere (The tool looks like a gun..don't be afraid!).

They will attach the wires and things and then tighten them. They'll use some plyers to cut away the excess wires and you'll be done.

The glue tastes absolutely horrible--so keep your tongue still! And may I add, have plenty of soup on hand to eat when you get home. You won't be chewing for awhile! Good luck.

Well, it takes about two hours. Since you are getting top and bottom, it will take about two hours to get them on. What they will do is take each brace and rubber band ( one at a time ) and sement them to your teeth. It feels werid a little for the first couple days. You will probally have to wear the rubber bands on your braces just to speed the process up the first time. It's ok. Just relax. You will have a perfect smile very soon. I am getting braces in about three weeks so.. Good luck to us! : (

I'm a dentist.

The bands are placed on your first molars (typically, they go on the first molars). Brackets are bonded to your teeth, an the wire is placed in the brackets. A few other things take place, but that's about it as far as you're concerned.

There shouldn't be any surprises.
