they sometimes do radiation locally to make sure no cells are left behind, chemo is to prevent cells from spreading and/or any that have already left the area in which it began.

This is a difficult question to answer because it really depends upon what grade and stage the tumor is in. There are different types of testicular cancer . . sarcoma is the worst.
My son has a rare sarcoma that predominately strikes boys and young adults. It is an aggressive and fast growing tumor that can double within 28 days. Because it is a high grade tumor and fast growing pediatric oncologists often recommend 4 to 6 rounds of chemotherapy even if the tumors have all been removed. All it takes is one microscopic cancer cell to escape, stay latent, and than reappear a few years later. It is a deceptive cancer, difficult to control once it spreds.
This type of sarcoma (DSRCT) can present as testicular cancer (as well as ovarian cancer in females). DSRCT, however, usually presents in the abdominal cavity but can spred rapidly.
Because of the aggressive and deadly nature of this type of tumor, even stage 1 and 2 is treated not only with surgery but with chemotherapy and sometimes radiation. People who have elected not to have chemo or radiation . . relapse . . this just happened to one young man who did not want to go through chemo and just went with surgery. Now because he did not have chemotherapy or radiation the cancer has returned in the liver and abdomen.
So, it will really depend on what type of tumor is present and how aggressive it is known to be. Most stage 1 cancers can just be surgically removed. But if is an aggressive tumor than the recommendation might be a few cycles of chemotherapy or radiation.

Chemo is used when the cancer has spread to other parts of the body or organs. If a tumor has been spotted in one area or organ of the body and has yet to infect any other area(s) or organ(s), then in most cases, they can remove that organ or area (if feasible) and chances of recovery can be 100%.

My doctor said that when they recommend follow up radiation or chemo, it is like giving an antibiotic after opening an abscess - it's to be absolutely sure that you get it all.

The allopathic school will try to sell you chemo, but it is deadly. If your lifestyle got you cancer, you must change the lifestyle to heal.
