My poor little girl fell on our ceramic tile floor and brooke one of her teeth. It's on the top, right next to her front teeth. The break goes about halfway up or a little higher on one side of her tooth. Should I call a dentist tonight? Is there anything they will be able to do for it?

I'm a dentist.

Unless she is in pain, or there are other injuries (such as lacerations or severely loose teeth), there's no urgency.

Of course, try to see the doctor on Monday. He/she will evaluate the tooth (and of course, evaluate your daughter for other injuries to her mouth).

Since she's only three, it's almost certainly a primary (baby) tooth, and treatment is often not indicated unless there is a problem with the pulp of the tooth, which can be accurately assessed in two weeks. If at that time, the tooth is nonvital (i.e. dead), a formocresol pulpotomy may be performed. Or, simply, the tooth may be extracted.

If the tooth can be kept, and for cosmetic purposes, the doctor may put a composite restoration.

Finally, don't worry.

This really should be a question for your dentist. Has your daughter seen an orthodontist yet? I had a chipped tooth and mine was able to fix it very easily, but it has not been a year yet so I'm don't know if it will fall out like your daughter's or not. It may have something to do with how the other teeth are touching the filling on her tooth, so perhaps by getting braces it wouldn't get worn so quickly? Sorry I couldn't be more help, but good luck.

If the tooth isn't bleeding, swollen, hurting her or cutting her tongue, there probably isn't any need to call him, but as a parent knowing how you are feeling, and knowing how Dentist are because I work for them, I would say call him and at least give him the opportunity to see her, or tell you to wait until Monday. You would hate to have to wake him in the middle of the night if the tooth starts to hurt your daughter then. There isn't a lot he will do to a deciduous tooth other than a pulpotomy and crown the tooth. Hope I've been of some help. You always hate to see your kids get hurt. Good luck!

if there is a chip in a back tooth, there is a better chance of getting a cavity, but if regular dental care is provided things should be fine. I chipped one of my front teeth 5 years ago and I've had no problems whatsoever. But your dentist can put a filling or a cap on your daughters tooth if you want it to look they way it originally did.

well im not sure but i know that my little sister chipped her tooth so they put a cap on it and then it just fell off again. so my mom didnt bother getting another one as it costs alot so if its just a baby tooth and it doesnt look to horrible maybe just wait til she looses it whatever you want to do basicially
