There is no documented evidence that sugar causes cancer to form or grow faster. It's a popular misconception.

Here is what Timothy Moynihan, M.D. says about this myth.

Debunking Cancer Myths

"Myth: People with cancer shouldn't eat sugar, since it can cause cancer to grow faster.

Answer: Sugar doesn't make cancer grow faster. All cells, including cancer cells, depend on blood sugar (glucose) for energy. But giving more sugar to cancer cells doesn't speed their growth. Likewise, depriving cancer cells of sugar doesn't slow their growth.

This misconception may be based in part on a misunderstanding of positron emission tomography (PET) scans. Doctors use PET scans to help determine the location of a tumor and see if it has spread.

During a PET scan, your doctor injects a small amount of radioactive tracer — typically a form of glucose — into your body. All tissues in your body absorb some of this tracer. But tissues that are using more energy — exhibiting increased metabolic activity — absorb greater amounts.

Tumors are often more metabolically active than healthy tissues. As a result, they may absorb greater amounts of the tracer. For this reason, some people have concluded that cancer cells grow faster on sugar. But this isn't true.".

Read what Panda wrote, and think about this fact, which can be found in any basic biology book :

All cells in the body use sugar (glucose) for energy. They need it to live. It is the cleanest fuel there is. In the case of the brain, it is actually the only form of fuel that can be used. Why do all animals like the taste of sugar ? Because it means energy, and your body therefore tells you it is good. Cancer cells are your cells, but only defective. But they still need energy. Lots of it.

Does that mean that by starving yourself you will kill cancer ? Not at all ! The energy (sugar or other) available will simply go to those cells, which have a faster metabolism, and reproduce faster, draining you of energy. You will die faster.

This stuff about sugar is a gross oversimplification, which means that the people telling it do not understand what they are talking about, or are trying to frighten you into buying their 'miracle' products, or senseless diets.

There is no basic difference between reffined sugar from sugarcane and the one you can find in fruits and vegetables. Your body doesn't care where it came from, as it is the same compound. The difference is in the other content of fruits and veggies, those vitamins and antioxidants, which help you stay healthy.
