I think the problem with society today is that life is too easy. Food and housing are too easy to obtain. Many of us work in an office shuffling paper and are living our lives watching the clock. If we were living 200 years ago, would life be so focused on survival that many of the problems we experience today be overlooked? Is most of what we consider disturbing or depressing just a frame of mind?

Life was not better 200 years ago. It was hard. Scrounging for survival is no way to live your life. True, people complain too much instead of counting their blessings, but material goods have improved the lives of millions. Pres. Roosevelt said, "If goods don't cross borders, armies will".

Housing is easy to obtain? Sure. If you work five jobs. and have 3 roommates.

My taxes and insurance just went up almost $300 a month just like that, with no rhyme or reason.
that can and often does put a lot of people with families out on the street you know, it happens all the time.
the man is coming in and forclosing on people's homes like crazy because the fed and the corporations want a slice of everything and it's never enough.

It's a good thing my husband just got a slight raise or he would of had to get a second job--which is virtually impossible because his first job is long hours and he works hard enough already.
I already have a job.
How many jobs are two people supposed to have just to get by barely scraping middle class?

it's bullsh!t in America, the government and corporations are giving the people a callaborative shake down.

....and people just keep charging on the cards going into debt just to make them feel like they are spending the hard earned money they work for, and living a decent life.
Well, it's all a facade since most of a person's wages go to living expenses with nothing extra.
In order to have any quality of life at all and feel like you have some nice things for the money you earn, you have to go into debt.
Oh, and forget about a vacation.;
never.
Europeans go all over the world and take five times as many vacations a year for just as good of pay as your average american does.

In this day and age, my theory is that some parents want their kids to have it better than they had it. In some cases, that's fine. It's just when they go way overboard on the material things. And most kids these days don't have to do chores or work outside the house. Everything is handed to them. That is not good. They have no way of learning the value of what they have.
In the case of adults...it's because they want what they didn't have either. The neighbors trying to keep up with the Joneses when the Joneses are in debt up to their eyeballs with no way of seeing the light of 'freedom.' They have enslaved themselves to a material world. I'm so glad for what I have...but it's all paid for. And I am not one that is into the 'material' things of this world. Only things I need. And I am truly happy this way.

Well spoken. We definitely lack imagination and desire. I think a big problem is the lack of belief in God. So we go out and buy and buy thinking it makes us feel better only to realize it doesn't fill the void. Families are broken apart and we comfort the children by giving them gifts. They could care less. And yes, I grew up on a self sustaining farm. If we didn't work and harvest, we wouldn't have eaten. There was a sense of satisfaction in it. Tv was practically unheard of. We worked hard but also knew how to rest on a Sunday and enjoy each other. I'm trying to instill this into my children, but it's hard. Computers and TV are very strong opponents.

We have to keep the government benevolent in its approach to our national problems and the problems of the world. And we need to send money to organizations that have the interests of others at heart.
