I used to have this happened o me all the time! It can be a pain. But, DO NOT soak it in any chemical. NOT even mouth wash. It will eat away at the retainer, I did this once and it made the retainer dissolve slowly. All you have to do is brush it lightly with your tooth brush and Crest whiting tooth paste. Only that will do because the others eat away at your retainer. Mouth will work only if you put your tooth brush in the mouth wash, and then brush your retainer. But, only do that twice a day at the most. Take it from ME! Hope this helps!

My orthodontist told me to use a Polident-type product to clean my retainer. You should dissolve the tablet in warm water, and place the reatiner in there. It only needs about 15 minutes or so to work. Then, just brush off the retainer and put it away. The kind I use is antibacterial, so this should work when you are sick also.

If they are the retainers that go on top of the roof of ur mouth or the bottom of your mouth, just pop them out.

When I used to have retainers, I would soak them in any kind of mouthwash, rub some parts with your finger or thumb, and then put it in really hot water. After putting it in hot water, be careful to pour it out and then put cold water on it to cool it down before putting it back on.

I'm a dentist.

Ask your dentist for a prescription for a bottle of Peridex (12% chlorhexidine gluconate) in which to soak your retainer.

Chlorhexidine is a strong antimicrobial. In fact, many surgeons use it in lieu of betadine to prep surgical sites.

Peridex comes with a minty taste.
