Wikipedia says: "As Muhammad is viewed by Muslims as a role model, his treatment of women and others is of special importance. Muhammad's treatment of women is viewed as surprisingly progressive for the time period in which he lived. Indeed, the Quran is credited with advancing women's rights in a way that was revolutionary for the seventh century world of Muhammad. A number of Muhammad's contemporaries were "shocked by the way he allowed his wives to stand up to him and answer him back. Muhammad regularly helped with household chores... Historians generally agree that Islamic social reforms in areas such as social security, family structure, and the rights of women improved on what was present in existing Arab society."

BTW, many sources say that Aisha was 12-19 when married, NOT 9. Some sources say she was betrothed at 9 but married at 15. Other sources say she married at 20. So NO, Muhammad was NOT a paedophile. And yes, the Qur'an is peaceful, please don't quote out of context.

Someone requested sources for Aisha being 12-20.

I don't claim certainty on the issue. But what is obvious is that there are too many possibilities and varied accounts for anyone to make ridiculous attacks on Muhammad.

Hadiths are sayings passed down from generation to generation and are about as reliable as many of the first and second century apocryphal works that most Christians do not accept. So, judging Muhammad based on these sayings is like judging Jesus based on the apocryphal Infancy Gospel.

What IS clear, from all historical sources, is that Muhammad was a caring, peaceful individual who only reluctantly fought to defend to His people. For years, before the flight to Medina, He had endured persecution and gave the other cheek. He only fought to defend others. He upheld the rights of women and it is very unlikely He slept with a child. Very unlikely.

Imogen Sue, Muhammad gave women the right to own property. He recognized them as valid human beings, unlike His arabian predecessors. He forbade the killing of girl-babes, which was a pre-Islamic arabian practice. He forbid cruelty to women. They also had a part in the decision-making of the community. I'm not claiming these things, scholars are and the Qur'an is a good testament to this.

The Taliban are crazy fanatics. There are crazy Christian groups that want to put "women in their place" as well. Most Muslims are actually quite sensible people.

rationalppl, I'm NOT even a Muslim, so what are you attacking? Most Muslim women do not wear burkas, and many don't even cover their heads at all these days.

Fruitcake, the Bible says "Ye shall know them by their fruits." Muhammad is a good tree which produced good fruits. Does that make Him a Prophet? I'll let you make your own mind up on that one.

Lord Dra' Vek. I just cited sources in the additional details.

Yes, most people are willingly ignorant about Prophet Muhammad and his affect on the entire world (Peace and Blessing be Upon him) . And I agree, it was impossible for the marriage of Aisha and Muhammad to have been consummated when she was age nine, because of the fact she was born years before the first revelation 610 C.E. and Prophet Muhammad didn't marry after the death of his beloved Khajiah (Peace and Blessing be upon her) until after 622 C.E. The consensus among most historians, Muslim and Non-Muslims, is that she was in her late teens to age twenty. There is also overwhelming evidence supporting this fact.

No one can dispute you if you don't cite your sources so in a sense you create an argument, you can't lose. Since you don't tell us who this is that says Aisha was 12-19 I will assume you made that up, and I still consider Muhammad a pedophile. And from what I have read of the quran and other holy books of Islam I can say they are full of hate and ignorance, just as are alot of other holy books. Why do people claim that religion is so great, when the ignorance and hate are staring them right in the face. Just because they choose not to follow those parts, doesn't make that religion peaceful and loving. It just makes their beliefs better. Stop claiming Islam along with most other religions are so great people. We he seen what they accomplish. Just look at history.

Muhammed was a great prophet whose words have been twisted by radical Islam to fit their own needs.Just as Jesus words are twisted by fanatical Christians to further their own agenda. Both Christianity and Islam worship the same God,the only God.When human kind can stop behaving like children and realize this,we will be much better off!!!!

I am glad that women have the right to be sewn in a sheet, buried more than half way in the ground and stoned. This, almost 1400 years later. He was progressive all right.
And the part about them being deficient in mind, brilliant. This has sure elevated them.

Your posting would have been interesting had you mentioned which women's rights did Mohammed support.
I don't wish to sound contrary but the Taliban forbade women to go to work or to school. It is a fact. Does anyone know by which law?
