When you have a small child with high lead levels and as they get older you will not only see the serious side affects of lead poisioning but only then can you answer your own question.I have 5 boys that was exposed to lead paint and dust.It causes behavior, eating, sleeping and learning problems.Only 2 of my kids was affected by these terrible side effects of lead poisoning.I know a child who had convulsions and was admited to the hospital with lead levels of 40 something and that child almost died several time during his 3 weeks hospital stay.Lead poisoning is a serious problem. Most people think you have to eat paint chips to get it.Yes you will get it from comtaminated paint chips but also you can get it from dust in your home that was on walls with lead paint, old bath tubs has lead based paint and alot of kids cant resist drinking a little bath water and they get lead.I found cups in my home 10 years ago that was made in china that had lead in them.Dirt contains lead and so does gas.I was asked by the doctor when my kids had it do we live close to a interstate. There is alot of ways kids get lead poisoning and some adults get it to.

The main hazard, as I understand it, is to children when they eat the chips. It causes heavy metal poisoning and affects brain development. The hazard to you is ingestion of either particles or smoke when the paint gets hot, so don't use a heat gun to remove the paint. Sanding should only be done with a mask approved for lead paint removal. Most of the chemical removers work very well and do not create a lead hazard.

Well I've been dealing with lead paint for many years, I'm 53 yrs old and still painting after 35 yrs in the business. Yes I'm with you on the big deal they make over it, just think how much is still out there on so many buildings and we're all not dead yet. If you chew on water-based paint I'm sure someone would get sick. Wear a mask and you'll be all right if your sanding, your local codes in some areas make it tuff, and if you live in mass. forget it, it would be cheaper to burn the house down. I know this didn't help at all but I hear and feel your frustration about something that isn't!!!

The government allows corporate manufacturing plants to spew out tons of toxicity into the air we breath besides all the toxic waste that is dumped in land fills aside from the radioactive elements that are buried all across the nation in an effort to camouflage the fact that as long as the rich are getting richer it's OK. The bush administration refused to join in on the environmental concerns of the global world because it "would hurt the economy of the country".
So your lead paint removal is a..........( fill in the blank)

Seal it and paint over it. If it is peeling and needs to be scraped or sanded...then you have to walk the line. It won't kill you immediately and you just about have to eat it to cause MOST problems. Contaminating your house with dust that is circulated and breathed regularly will also cause health problems. Common sense rules...the government has none of that!

Don't report it, and either paint over it, or remove it yourself. Just don't eat the chips. lol.
