I don't mean a retirement home, or a rehabe, or mental insitute. I have a person that is sick, takes medication, and can not work. We love him very much. But the burden of taking care of him is become too great and monthly it is becoming harder. I know they have places like this. I just can't think of what they are called or where I should look/ who I should call for a place like this. Any ideas?

my dad is 46 years old. he has been able to work in the past 4 years and has been on so much medication that it has altered his mood. day by day he becomes harder and harder for mom to take care of him. she doesn't have the energy to do it anymore. where could we take him? not a nursing home because he is too young right? any ideas?

If you mean assisted living facility or independent senior housing, he has to be either independent for the one or able to assist in his care. If he is heavy and cannot stand on his own or some other criteria, then a nursing home might be the only way.You should not feel bad if you have reached the breaking point. If you are caring for him and you get sick from pushing yourself too hard, then no one would be there for him either. It wouldn't do any good for both of you to be ill. Just look in yellow pages , drop in with a friend or relative, and ask if you can have a tour of the place. Explain your situation and they will help advise you. Tour and get information at as many places as you can to get an idea. Ask friends and relatives if they know any good places to recommend...good luck

Nursing home? If it's long-term chronic.
Hospice? If it's terminal.

respite center?.. but then thats kinda the same as retirement home.

you could get a carer to help out that way you do your normal stuff and the carer does all the menial tasks like clothing them and stuff.
