Its an Altec Lansing, so I can't work on very much of the speaker it self. All that is in the back are as follows: Audio inputs and outputs, then AC power cable and...thats it!

The first answer is a good start, but if it is a powered subwoofer, you might need to make sure the plugs for the subwoofer and system amp don't cause a problem. Since the subwoofer is probably on a different plug than the system amp, it could be wired incorrectly and have the hot and neutral reversed. That could cause a 60 Hz tone due to the difference between the two items.

Try rotating one of the plugs 180 deg (if they aren't polarized) and see if that fixes it. If they are polarized and they can't be flipped, then check the wiring of the sockets to make sure they both have the hot and neutral wires correctly installed. If you don't know how to work with AC power, get a professional!!

Check the cable from the reciever to the subwoofer. It may be loose, defective or the contacts dirty. Also make shure the cable is sheilded type.
