Is there any software program that is like Microsoft Office in that it's a good program to use for writing documents? I write (stories, novels, etc.) but I have a trial version of MS Office and I want to find a lower costing alternative.

OpenOffice is completely free and is an open source alternative to M$ products. It runs on basically any kind of computer. If you use a Mac you will have to use X11 (available free from Apple) for now, but they are working on a native Aqua port that will be initially available in a few months.

Open Office is a great alternative to Microsoft Office. It contains apps that are comparable to Access, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint, and Word. It also works seamlessly with MS Office files.

Take a look at OpenOffice. It is free of charge and contains much of what MS Works contains. Myself, I use AbiWord which is also free.
