Many dont know what their doing. I read several panic questions about whelping and new pups. Why do the hurt the dogs (the mother dogs) they say they love??

Because they are stupid enough to think that they are going to make money.

I too have seen many panic questions about a dog (or cat) that has just given birth or is pregnant and the owner has no idea what to do. Why does this happen? There are many reasons.

1. Some people believe that you must allow your pet to have one or more heat cycles in order to fully grow and mature into an adult. This is simply not true, and when that heat cycle comes around...no one is paying attention and the pet gets pregnant.

2. Parents want their children to see the "miracle of birth", as others have mentioned. This is an extremely poor reason to whelp a litter, and once those puppies start growing up into rambunctious adolescents, they suddenly aren't so cute and desirable when they're chewing up master's shoes. Most of these puppies end out dumped at the humane society.

3. Owning a purebred automatically gives you the right and necessity to breed your dog. Wrong. There are many responsible, educated breeders out there. Leave the breeding to them. Most of the pups from backyard breeders end out in the hands of other people who think they should breed their dog just because she's a purebred, and the cycle continues.

4. Money. This goes along the same lines as number three. Some people think that if they own a purebred (or even mutt sometimes, hence the "labradoodle" phenomenon), they can breed her and sell the pups for some quick money.

Whelping a litter isn't cheap. A lot of money is required for care of the mother and pups. Real, educated breeders don't make a lot of money off selling puppies. Puppies aren't expensive just because they're purebred. They're expensive in order to pay for medical costs, and to kind of help ensure that they are going to someone willing to spend a bit of extra money on their dog.

Uneducated and backyard breeders don't realize this, or aren't willing to spend the necessary money to give the mother and pups proper care. They end out with sickly, bad tempermented pups, which frustrate their new owners and often end out in the pound.

To get these people to stop selling pups, simply don't buy from them. The same goes for pet stores. Never ever buy a puppy from a pet store, as it comes from a puppy mill or backyard breeder. Responsible breeders never give their pups to a pet store, because they want to be able to screen the people that their pups go to. Pet stores and backyard breeders accept anyone willing to shell out cash, no questions asked. And the cycle continues again.

5. And then there are those who think that neutering their dog makes him feel less manly (or feminine for the females). That's only a human concept, and dogs don't care if they're fixed or not.

6. And finally, some people either don't have the money for it, or just don't see it as a necessity. They think they can just watch their dog and nothing will happen. Dogs are sneaky, and it's not hard for the pets of these owners to get pregnant because they are often under little to no supervision.

I do agree with Alli. There needs to be some kind of breeder licensing or registration program to enforce spay/neutering for unlicensed breeders. Unfortunately, there is no such program right now and it would be very difficult to implement and enforce.

A lot of times it is an 'accident' because they didn't get their dog fixed. Any dog who is not owned by a reputable breeder should be fixed. Other than that, some of the reasons are that they want a dog of a certain mix, they just want to see puppies being born, or they want their children to see the 'miracle of birth'. And some people have this wierd reason that the feel if their dog is a pure breed dog, they HAVE to breed it with the other pure breed that lives down the street. All of these are the wrong reason to breed a dog. And the 'miracle of birth' often results in homeless dogs that end up in an animal shelter. And if not good canidates for adoption, or if they don't get adopted, they end up being euthanized. If people can't take responsibility for a life after they create it, they should not create the life to begin with. This is a very big problem that angers me. I wish people didn't get to chose whether or not they got their dog spayed or neutered. I wish there was a law that controlled this. Unless you are a licensed breeder, your dog has to be spayed or neutered. Of cousre there is no such thing as a licensed breeder, but there should be.

I AGREE! So much. I think they feel they can make money, but they forget the stud, breeding and health care costs, then the b tch may need emergency vet care -(an emergency Ceasarian may cost thousands!), then, assuming you do have one or two healthy pups at least, you start with the bills again - you have to worm, vaccinate and feed ALL of them. Mother included! -Then.....all those people who said 'I'll have a puppy' decide they have bought one from somewhere else, so you end up keeping them beyond 10 weeks - that's alot of expense! and then theres' the registration costs, collars, id costs, chipping.......ONLY BREED CHAMPIONS FOR THE SAKE OF IMPROVING THE BREED, ie leave it to the experts!

most thinks they have the best dog in the world and wants to past this on to some one else and for a price and they think they can get rich. but in fact they are really stupid. l seen people cry after their dog died giving birth to a litter of unfit pups. they lose their love for pups that are not worth two cents

Because they are ignorant. They need to stop and think about the pain they are causing the mother dog and how letting her have a heat cycle causes a greater chance for getting cancer and also for all the pups that end up in shelters. It also boils down to people being selfish.

Some people just want a carbon copy of their dog, others think they can make money, but, believe it or not some feel they don't have the right to deny the dog a sex life and/or children. The Weirdos want to just get the dog laid and don't even think of the consequences. Beats me?

Because they just don't know and it's up to people like us to educate them as to the harm they are doing to their beloved pets and other animals living in shelters and on the streets being euthanized and abused.

Because it's what people do. Seriously, how many people try to do [fill in the blank] even though they don't know what they're doing?
