I really hate people sometimes. Not just a casual dislike; I'm talking red-hot flaming waves of pure hatred. My cell phone rings:
"Hello, is Jill there?"
"No, this isn't Jill's cell phone."
"Where's Jill?"
"Presumably waiting for you to call the right number."
:: click ::
:: phone rings 2 seconds later ::
"Hello, this still isn't Jill's cell phone."
"Uh, is Jill there?"
"What part of THIS IS NOT JILL'S CELL PHONE are you not getting?"
"Where's Jill?"
"Please tell me you don't vote."
"I'm going to tell Jill you said that."
"No you're not, you don't even know her damn number."

They probably thought they had the correct number written down, and only hit a wrong number dialling it. Only after the second try they'd find out that the number was incorrect in the first place.

Still the entire scene you describe sounds pretty dumb, I guess some people just have a hard time dealing with unexpected information... I've had people repeatedly ask for someone too even after I said they had the wrong number... 'but where is she?' 'when will she be back?' 'do you know her number?' after I've already clearly said soandso doesn't live here and I've never heard of her.....

They might not necessarily hit re-dial, they may just re-dial the number that they believe is "Jill". But when it turns out to the the same number as before, they just don't relize that it isn't her/their number. They don't take the time to look for the person's right number, or call a friend/family member that has the number...and stop calling the one that was wrong the first time.

I know where you're coming from. I had this guy that kept calling my cell phone. He would leave messages in my voice mail!! I called him back asking whom he was looking for and told him that he had the wrong number and there was nobody there by that name.

they aren't pressing redial... like other people suggested, they have the number written down, and they think they just dialled it wrong, so they dial it again. When you get a wrong number, ask them what number they wanted to dial. If it's your number, tell them they've been given a wrong number, and they wont need to call you again. I'm sure they covered this in an episode of Seinfeld. Maybe you need to stop reading so many books and watch some TV once in a while. Sheesh!

Well... Don't be mean. You don't even know if that person is suicidal and they are just trying to talk. Give it at least 3 tries before you give them a piece of your mind!
p.s. Dont act like you never called the same wrong number twice.

Ha Ha Ha... oh thats funny and true. I'm not sure why people do such things... maybe it is one of those mysteries that we will never understand.
