The Military and reserves are a job, like every other job.
When they are on the job, they are required to wear the proper uniform. When they are not on duty, it is their option whether to wear the uniform or not, but when they do wear the uniform off duty, they should be reflective of it's purpose. It's like wearing the dress uniform while attending church during a relatives funeral.

No, in fact, BDU's are NOT to be worn (by army) in most off-base public places that require more than a quick stop. You can't go shopping in BDU's unless it's on base. The PT uniform, class C uniform, is the same, not for public (non excercise) wear. You may wear Class A' & B's, those are like dress shirts and slacks with a coat.
After work, you wear civilian clothes.

Having been there done that. I will tell you that while training you wear what the Drill Sgt. says. That means all Army clothes all the time. As for regular active duty Army, you wear PT's to PT time and uniform to duty. Class A's to special events and such. But once the day is done and you go home or to the barracks you are free to wear anything you want. Just so long as you show up to work in uniform. I hope I answered your question. As for reserves I think it is only when they are on duty.

Okay, my time was Navy (1985-1999), and Dungarees (BDU equivilant) were unauthorized OFF base... as were our flight suits... you could get in DEEP trouble for wearing a "work" uniform in public... probably the reason the Navy is re-looking the uniform.
On the boat during off duty hours we'd wear shorts & t-shirts... I would wear the LOUDEST Jimmy Buffett attire possible (off Alaska in Winter).
Now I'm old... but what are these ACU critters ??

during the duty day you are required to wear ACU's (BDUs have been done away with) but in the field (ie on deployment or training center) you have to wear a military Uniform were ever you go (PTs or ACUs)

No they can wear civilian clothes on their off time. Also they aren't supposed to wear just part of a uniform unless it's the boots. For ex. this guy in my husband's old unit had a bad habit of wearing his PT shirt and shorts with flipflops while on base. He always seemed to get caught, get in trouble, and then do it again! Some people just don't learn I guess!.

My husband only wears his uniform while he is at work. When he goes home or on the weekend, he wears whatever he wants. Now while in Iraq, he has to wear his ACUs all the time. If he goes to the gym, he can wear either his PT uniform or his ACUs.
I have to add...in the military town where my husband is stationed...people go off base all the time in their uniforms. They go get lunch in their uniforms, go out to dinner in their uniforms, and go to Wal-Mart in the uniforms. I am not sure they get in trouble for that...it seems like I would always see men in their uniforms after work shopping at the grocery store and what not.

nicely for starters purely with the aid of fact somebody says they are interior the defense force would not no longer likely mean they are. DoD policies governing institutions with Hate, Subversive, and Violent communities is extremely needless to say made to all contributors. i might take with lots skepticism that a individual claiming to be defense force surely is at the instant energetic or a reservist and being the claims are made in a public open communicate board, in view that being linked with them is grounds for prompt discharge. yet interior the tip, in the event that they are energetic, and are linked with a Hate, Subversive or Violent team, they have not have been given everywhere interior the defense force that defends all of the folk, no longer basically those you like.

You have to wear your BDUs on base and when you are working.
If off base and on your own time BDUs are optional.
If on base and on your own time usually you do not have to wear your BDUs.
If off base and on militaries time, depends upon where you are going and what you are doing.
