They make a product for your application called 3m Command. They come off cleanly yet hold strong. there are various sizes that hold specific weights.

What kind of place are you in that doesn't 'allow' you to hang pictures? All landlords that I've had allow items to hang on walls. Their only requirement is that the fasteners stay in place when you leave and any 'holes' can be filled with spackling compound.
I'd read your lease agreement again, then look for a 'reasonable landlord'.

There is a type of adhesive hook that is temporary. 3M makes one called Command Adhesive.

It requires a relatively smooth wall with secure paint or wall paper.

When you want to remove it, there is a tab at the bottom you slowly pull, and it will release the glue. It secures very well if the wall is good.

The cost isn't prohibitive either.

Good Luck

Bulldog hooks. You can find them in Wal-Mart in the hardware section, or go to a hardware store. They make different sizes. Make sure you read on the back of the pkg. for how much weight they hold.><>

if the painting doesn't weigh very much, try double sided tape.
