I'm an experienced traveler. I find the biggest factor in saving money is the amount of time you spend on your plans. By checking, and searching and rechecking and searching. Going to a travel agent, they try save you money, but they want to look and book it, and charge their big fee. I haven't used one for over 5 years, and the last time I found it a bad experience and expensive - never went back.
The only time I would use them is if I was traveling to a international location that I felt I didn't have enough information on that they might be able to have some insight on.
It's not easier, more convenient or faster, as I can book at 3am or at the office online, so I can be done with it (or take more time to look), whereas seeing an Agent cuts into my lunch hour, has me rushing there after work to make it before they close, or an extra trip driving downtown on Saturday.

It really depends, there are times you will save money, because they will get special deals that you can not get, but now that the internet is so open a lot of times you can find the deals and will be able to save some on paying someone to do the leg work. If I was going to travel out of the country and didn't have a clue what to expect I would get a travel agent to do it, but if not I would search and ask people (on yahoo answers) what there is to do there, you can find message boards also.
Good Luck! And where is your next travel plans to?

Really depends on your needs. Travel agents are useful for first time travelers. When our family planned to travel to Hong Kong we had no idea what to do. The travel agency gave suggestions for us to choose from. Though it was a bit more expensive but is worth it. If you do not have time to plan your trip, the travel agency can do that for you. However, if you are a seasoned traveler or a backpacker who is adventurous enough to go anywhere, you might not need a travel agent.

Many travel agents develop personal relationships with individuals at the companies they sell. They leverage these relationships to get you things you can’t get on your own. That “sold out” room or the connecting rooms you want for your extended family trip when the online sites say they aren’t available. They also have exclusive entrée to experiences you might not know are available to you.

As a hotel manager, you can almost always get hotel rooms cheaper by contacting the hotel yourself. We give the agents our price, the mark it up for their profit. Some companies charge us a percentage, either way you can cut out all extra expense. Most hotels have three prices, for example, if you go thur our reservation system for one person one night, it would cost you from $43 to $48 a night. If you call me directly it would cost you $42.00, If you come in in person, business is slow, and I feel like you are going to walk, I will offer it at $38. I have worked in several hotels, managed a Super 8, Best Western and non chain, they are all the same way.

It's just easier sometimes... you can get your tickets in advance, and then you don't have to wait around in line for your tickets once you're at the airport/train depot. I've even had a travel agent deliver the tickets to my door personally, for no extra charge.

"WITH OUT A TRAVEL AGENT YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN."
That is the slogan Australian Federation of Travel Agents is using to promote the use of travel agents and as a travel agent I think its perfect.
Good Luck.
