to be independent - you have to start acting independent. you have to let them know that you'll never be independent unless you start making your own decisions in life. right or wrong they will be your decisions and you'll have to live with them. let them know that you love and appreciate what they have done for you and that you are not abandoning them - it's just that you need to start fending for yourself. they have to realize someday they will not be there for you and you will have to manage on your own and wouldn't it be kinder if they gave you the opportunity to be your own person while they are still on this earth to see the wonderful adult you can grow into. this way they can always be content knowing that the little girl they created can make it on her own with or without them. this could be the biggest gift they ever give you. let them know it.

Forget about the issue of hurting people. You're a grown person and it's time to act like one. You're age group is just completely out of control as far as this issue goes. Get the hell out of there and get your own place. You're just being lazy and allowing this to happen. It's a tough world out there and you should already be practicing functioning within it.

It's time for you to get your own place. You are an adult now. Explain to your mom that you want to try things on your own and that you know that her door is always open. Tell her you love her and that you're thankful to be lucky enough to have a mom like her.

One thing you can do is show her that you're mature. Talk to her about it and ask her to give you a little slack. Ask her to start with the small things and make sure you handle yourself in a mature and responsible way. Purchase a small safe deposit box or filing cabinet to keep your important stuff in. Be pro-active instead of reactive. Don't wait for her to ask you to do things. If it needs to be done then take the iniative to do it yourself. She'll gradually begin to feel more comfortable that you can handle yourself.
