In a perfect world, animals would be free to live their lives to the fullest: raising their young, enjoying their native environments, and following their natural instincts. However, domesticated dogs and cats cannot survive "free" in our concrete jungles, so we must take as good care of them as possible. People with the time, money, love, and patience to make a lifetime commitment to an animal can make an enormous difference by adopting from shelters or rescuing animals from a perilous life on the street. But it is also important to stop manufacturing "pets," thereby perpetuating a class of animals forced to rely on humans to survive."
-PETA pamphlet, Companion Animals: Pets or Prisoners?
"I don’t use the word "pet." I think it’s speciesist language. I prefer "companion animal." For one thing, we would no longer allow breeding. People could not create different breeds. There would be no pet shops. If people had companion animals in their homes, those animals would have to be refugees from the animal shelters and the streets. You would have a protective relationship with them just as you would with an orphaned child. But as the surplus of cats and dogs (artificially engineered by centuries of forced breeding) declined, eventually companion animals would be phased out, and we would return to a more symbiotic relationship – enjoyment at a distance."
-Ingrid Newkirk, PETA vice-president, quoted in The Harper's Forum Book, Jack Hitt, ed., 1989, p.223.
"It is time we demand an end to the misguided and abusive concept of animal ownership. The first step on this long, but just, road would be ending the concept of pet ownership."
-Elliot Katz, President, In Defense of Animals, "In Defense of Animals," Spring 1997

Have you ever heard of more crap then this? Dogs WERE living on their own years a go. THEY decided to join us humans for their benefit. What we humans have done is provide, MOST of them a better life and protection. In turn, they have provided us with their skills. It is only when we as humans try to intervene and start doing stupid things, like breeding dogs that do not conform to their original purpose and then treat our dogs like humans that we start having problems. Peta needs help.

PETA wants to get rid of all animals in our society, including pets. It is for this reason, and because of their irresponsible shock-and-awe tactics, that I support ASPCA and HSUS, both of which seek to embrace and cultivate the human-pet bond.

Many people may support PETA for other reasons - fur, factory farming, fishing, testing, etc., but rarely would they support the full extremist position. I don't think people are unaware of their anti-pet position, but rather think that PETA's overall mission fits their own opinions well enough to earn their support. Historically, while PETA has held their anti-pet position, they have focused more on industrial and commercial animal injustices. When push comes to shove, I bet that if PETA really started going after anti-pet laws instead of anti-factory farming, fur, and experimentation laws, A LOT of people would jump ship.

I'm confused. Your title seems to suggest that you don't agree with animal rights groups, but your narrative (not a question) seems to support animal rights.

I think that if a person loves animals, you can call them pets or companions. I agree that we shouldn't manufacture pets, because there are too many animals that need a loving home.

Realizing the truth about the AR groups is, unfortunately, over most peoples head here. They are trying to figure out stuff like why their dogs turn around before laying down. LOL!!!

Eventually, when there are no more dogs, they'll go "what happened"?

Keep fightin the fight!!!!!! If your post wakes up ONE person, it is worth it!
