They'll check and compare your left and right forearms to see which vein is the most visible. So you place one arm palm side up on top of a triangular-shaped block.

Then they'll tie a rubber strip above your elbow [it doesn't hurt] and wipe your inner elbow with a alcohol pad to sanitize it. Then they'll flick or rub your vein a few times to make it pop out.

The nurse will tell you to fist your hand and then give you a shot [if they're no good at it, they'll do it slowly; that's more painful than doing it quickly] and depending on how large your veins are, the needle will be differently sized. If you whine a lot, you might be able to get the baby needle which is very thin and small.

The needle is hollow to allow the blood to flow through. Because of blood pressure, the blood will automatically flow out. The needle is attached to a tube, which empties into a test tube-looking thing.

If they need more blood and they cannot get it, you might have to get a shot in the other arm too. If they still don't have enough blood, they might put a needle right above your knuckles. That's unlikely though, so don't worry. They may also possibly give you a heat pad to widen the veins so the nurse can see it.

I am a coward when it comes to needles, so I feel for you. Good luck!

PS-Sorry for the details, but when I learn everything about the procedure I feel better walking into the room knowing what's going to happen next.

I do too. But you just have to deal with it. They will insert a needle with a tube attached to it and let it fill up and sometimes they take the first tube off and fill a second one that does not hurt, when they insert the needle it depends on the nurse doing it some are very good at it and others are not. Most are good. do not watch.

well the needle will hurt like a little bee sting. At first u might be a little nervous but when they put it in you feel a little sting type of feeling . I assure you you are not going 2 cry or scream.
