I suppose a lot depends upon what sect of christianity a person chooses to think is correct.
Clearly, the earth and universe are much more ancient than a mere six thousand years, and any idiot who contests this well established fact simply cannot be reasoned with. Best to dismiss these ones as the morons they are, since they only pick and choose what they want to believe. If you let them spew on, they only dig themselves deeper into their own stupidity.
That said, the Bible doesn't say in what year creation started. The "creative days" obviously referred to epochs of time, not 24 hour periods here on earth. Given this, neither the Bible nor science contradict each other.
What the Bible does concern itself with is the relationship Jehovah (God) has had with humankind, beginning with Adam and Eve about 6 thousand years ago, which is apparently the point at which humans developed a conscience and a capacity to distinguish right from wrong (morals), the ability to comprehend mortality (death), and a need to know why we exist and to whom do we owe our existence.
The rest, as they say, is history.

Not so in truth. The creation of our world and our universe came about through the divine power of Jesus Christ as instructed by the Father long before the fall of Adam and Eve.
The creation was of spiritual content, then physical. We have no revelation telling us how long the animals and plant life were in existence until Adam and Eve were tempted and then fell from God's presence. But when that happened, time as we know it came into being.
