Look guys keep in mind that I am thee most animal lover in the world and taking that 7 month old kitten back to the shelter really was very hard for me, but also keep in mind that I made the decision based on this.
My 16 year old cat died and both my 7 year old cat and myself were somewhat depressed and lonely..
I thought after reading many experts testimony that getting a 2nd cat would increase life span, exercise and the buddy system with my exsisting cat.
They were seperated and had many supervised visits for about a week, things went well however my older cat became depressed and was even cornered several times by the younger more agressive kitten.. She was obviously umcomfortable and even afraid of this younger smaller cat..
I still feel bad, but after coming back home and seeing my cat run around the house like a track starr, I know i did the right thing.. I'll call every friday to see if that young adorable kiity gets adopted

I know how it feels to bring a pet back to a shelter. I had to do it recently and I too am a huge animal lover. I would adopt every homeless animal there is if I could.
However, to keep yourself sane, remind yourself that it's a kitten and everyone wants a kitten. There's no doubt the kitten will find a good home. The most important thing is that the cat that you have already committed yourself to is happy. Having a kitten around may have been too stressful for your other cat. Don't feel guilty about failing either cat because you are still there to be your current cat's buddy.

I adopted a six week old kitten when I already had 2 older cats; Sydney was 6 and Murphy was 5. The older the younger one got the more dominant she became. To make a long story short, my two older cats just up and left. Not at the same time, but a few years apart. I still have Nestle' (the youngest). She is seven now. If I had it to do all over again, I probably would have taken Nestle' back. I think I would still have the other two. Hind sight is 20/20. You did the right thing.

It is very traumatizing and stressful to be locked up in a cage and alot of cats/kittens are euthanized because there is not enough homes available.
There are steps to take to introduce the kitten to your other cat and if they are not done right it can cause problems. How long did you have the cat? Did you give it a good chance for them to get to know each other?
If your cats leave it might be the owners fault, not the kitten.

Don't feel bad! I don't think you did anything wrong at all. I tried bringing a kitten into our home with my cat, and she just would not tolerate it and was in constant distress. So I took the kitten back. Don't worry, the kitten will be adopted in no time.
PS: I'm so sorry about your 16-year-old!!!!

a week is not really a very long time for cats to become friendly with each other, but you know your older cat better than anyone else. if you really are convinced that she would never adjust to the kitten, then you did what was best for her. however, kittens are a dime a dozen, so dont be surprised if the kitten you returned ends up in kitty heaven. at least you tried

I know how hard it must have been for you. I have 7 cats myself and believe me when I tell you this. Sometimes I feel I shouldn't have brought the last 2 home. I love them though. It has been extremely hard for me, as they have been pissing everywhere around the house (they are all indoor cats) including the beds, sofas, carpet, you name it. It is a little too late for me as they have been with me for about 3 months. If I could turn back time, I would have done otherwise for their sake and my other kitties sake.

You did the right thing. I would do the same in your place. Your first duty is to the cat you've had for years. And the kitten will find a new forever home and hopefully it will be more suitable for her.

yes, you probably did the right thing. Good for you for trying a new friend. Now, probably itis best you and your older feline friend have time on your own, to grieve and get used to being a 2 'people' family! your older caat will probably learn to love the single life and the additional attention!
