Between now and the time you graduate from high school, the amount could increase on the amount of spending money needed for undergraduate and dental school programs. Plus, the savings could effect how much financial aid is received because the state and federal governments along with the university itself takes into consideration both the family's financial resources (savings) and income. The best thing is to start searching for scholarships, and I will list several free sources to locate college scholarships.

First, the FAFSA form will tap need based financial aid from the state and federal governments along with the college itself. It is based on financial resources and family income. The time to apply is January 1 or later for the upcoming fall semester or quarter of college.

Second, the high school guidance office has a list of local scholarships for current high school students to apply for consideration. The list is mainly for seniors though, but it would not hurt to ask either.

Third, the public library has a book listing scholarships with some not even listed on the web.

Fourth, the college's financial aid office and website has a list of private scholarships offered from outside organizations and companies.

Fifth, good grades and SAT/ACT scores do pay in merrit based scholarships from the college itself.

Finally, join several free membership scholarship search websites. There is a scholarship for almost anything. Most are updated on a regular basis. Most offer a customized search based on information entered into a form on its website. The time is now to start looking for colleges.

Good luck!
