Hello,
We are moving in Oahu with our 2 young kids. We believe in public schools and not big buildings. Where should we live?

I have went to two different school in Oahu around Honolulu. Waikiki Elemetary School(K-6th grade) and Ala Wai Elementary School(K-5th grade) They both has the same school district which is, Hawaii Dept. of Education school District. Waikiki Elementary was the worst, there had been lots of bully going on. Ala Wai Elementary is the best school, they use brand new text book each year.I had to move to Waikiki Elementary because in Ala Wai Elementary, the population of japanese were over flooding .Since I am japanese American, I couldn't pay attention in English language. Although Ala Wai was the best school. By the time your child is going to middle school, try not to go to Washington Middle School. There has been alot of sexual harrasment and alot of people became pregnant at the age of 13-14. I didn't go to any Hawaii's middle school because I had to move to another state.

You might want to check out east Oahu - Kahala, Waialae, Aina Haina, Hawaii Kai. These areas tend to attract higher income families, and have reputable public schools. Of course, living in these districts comes at a premium. Expect to buy a small house for at least 700,000, or pay sky-high rent.
Other places to consider are Pearl City and Moanalua/Salt Lake. I've heard that Pearl City has some of the best public elementary schools in the state.

My son attends Pearl City HIGHLANDS Elem (not to be confused with Pearl City Elem) ... it is the third highest performing elem on the island after one in Niu Valley and Momilani Elementary.

Almost 60% of the students at his school are GE (Geographic Exception; out of the area) students who come due to the great reputation.

Mr. Ching is an outstanding and involved principal.
