most cops live else where because they dont want some punk tearing up thier stuff while they are on duty some departments even stipulate that youlive out of your area for just that reason imagine comming home and finding your motorsickle or bass boat destroyed because some little ***** that you busted took it personal Id probably go to jail for assault after I caught him

some towns require residency as a condition of employment. NYC won't let you patrol the precinct where you live, but you still can work in the same borough (county). Almost all cops work very close to or in the area where they live.
Cops do get hassled every once in a blue moon, but thats rare. Thats why they are able carry a gun off duty. Plus, most criminals are smart enough not to hassle someone who knows who they are and can hit them with more charges. Criminals are stupid, but not that stupid.Plus, despite all their talk of "I'd like to see you without that badge and gun" most don't have the balls to actually do anything.

in my town, most of the people that get arrested live on the north and east side. most of the officers live on the south and the west sides. can you guess which side of town the nice areas are located?
you don't see a lot of off-duty harrasment going on. cops look just like everybody else when they are out of uniform.
there aren't any 'rules' about having to live in a certain area based on your assigned patrol. especially since patrol areas change frequently and our town is small enough that the areas overlap a great deal.

I am a officer, and I must live within the city limits. I have been approached a few times off-duty with that "don't I know you line", my general response is no and make up some off the wall answer. The reason being is that ALOT of people do not like the police and the give that line "if you didn't have that badge on or I hope to run into you when your off".Blah-Blah........

Most officers live in or near the area they patrol. Cops are really never totally "off", so most people won't give you too much flack when you're not in uniform. It's the same for DA's, people don't give you too much crap because it's stupid to do that. Think about it, the next time that officer pulls you over, if you've been disrespectful you're not getting out that ticket.

I live and work in the same city. It is the city I grew up in and the city where I intend to work until I retire and live until I die. I often run into people I have arrested and am yet to have a problem off duty. I have found that most people you arrest know that they had it coming and accept that after it's over.

A lot of departments have rules that you have to live in the city or town you work for.

Most officers I know live OUTSIDE of the jurisdiction they work for.........including me! It's not worth running into the guy you sent to prison or put in jail for 6 months or having your stuff vandalized.
