All Cognacs are brandies but not all brandies are Cognacs. Brandies are distillates of a wide variety of fruits. Many of them are terrible and cloyingly sweet. Brandies that are made from the Ugni Blanc grape in the Cognac region of France are the only ones that can legally be called Cognac. The Ugni Blanc grape is the most widely grown grape in the world and usually it is made into "not-too-interesting" wines. In Italy it is known as the Trebbiano grape and thereby wines of the same name.
