I read something that said at the turn of the 20th century 95% of the U.S. population still lived on farms and raised just enough to support themselves.

How were the Romans and other cultures able to assemble such large Army's and be able to support them? How were they able to raise enough food to support such a large group of poeple and supply them this food on the battle fields?

The Romans knew the secret to war was logistics and they worked on it and improved it with every chance they got. A Roman soldier served for 18 years. He had a better chance of living to 40 years of age then a regular citizen of Rome.

The Roman Empire was huge. Those who were in support of the Romans number in the tens of millions. The rest simply lived under their control, because they were so powerful.

I imagine so of the Roman soldiers were forced to fight. They were probably faced with a "You fight, and you may live, but if you don't fight, I'll slay you where you stand" ultimatum.

I would suggest getting out the popcorn, kicking back
and playing a Kirk Douglas classic called Spartacus....
Although Hollywood does its schitck here , you'll get an
eyefull of the killing machine Rome was....Braveheart is also
good for the horror and efficiency of the geo-political wars of old.

They brought food with them. Food is resupplied by whatever transportation methods available

They were all apart of Rome and it was their duty as a citizen to fight for their empire. If they didn't they either left, were killed, or exiled

Mainly, a lot of these troops, were recruited from the homeless and poor. Plus when they conquered a region, they would enslave a number of people there. Also there was a lot of military fanaticism among the troops and the consuls (generals).
