Maybe the life is similar to ours or more simple and they do not have the technology to travel in space. But if they do, and have visited here, they are most likely way more advanced than we and maybe have decided to help us in ways we can not yet understand or notice, but someday will. Maybe not all advanced civilizations are out for invasion or destruction. Or maybe the universe is so large, none have made it to us yet.

1- They probably have no reason to if they were far enough along to be able to.
2- The Universe is a big place. It is very unlikely that they would have found us even if they were relatively close. Our radio signals are only out 60 LY or so.
3- Again, because it is so big, it would take a tremendous effort to do it. It is unlikely that it would be commercially viable even if they would want to and were close enough.
4- Life may be pretty rare and there may not be any technological life reasonably close. Given the time SETI has been scanning for it, this is likely.

If there is intelligent life, then they are restricted by the same laws of physics as us, i.e. the speed of light. Nothing can travel faster than that, according to Einstein general relativity. So space travel by any mechanisms we know of would be measured in 100's or thousands of years from the nearest stars we think capable of having an earthlike planet.
And why would you assume they would be hostile? That was the basis of a lot of 1950's sci-fi during the peak of the cold war paranoia.

1. our nearest neighbour is a long way away, it would take 70 years to get there. we are on the outskirts SUBURBS of our universe, not in the centre, so planet hopping is raTHER DIFFICULT.
2. just look at the life on this planet, do you think that aliens would consider wanting to mix with the religious nuts on this planet?
3. just because we are aggressive, you assume the rest of the universe is set up the same way, and want's nothing better than to invade us?

just because someone is intelligent doesn't mean they will invade anybody. i haven't invaded anyone yet.
also, if they could travel at light speed it would take them many years to get here. it's probably not practical. that's why i don't believe that ufos are from other planets.

The universe is simply extremely large and its possible that life may be extremely rare although we don't know the probability of life forming on an earthlike planet. Its quite possible that the nearest life is so far away that travel would be practically impossible and prohibitively expensive.

The laws of physics conspire to make interstellar travel an expensive proposition at best. Besides, who says any of our neighbors would want a planet with all that nasty, corrosive oxygen floating about? I'd just build a ringworld if I was that short on space.

Would you invade your gold fish tank? Of course not. You want to watch them so you can feel superior to another life form. There's probably some aliens out there and we are to them what your gold fish are to you.
