I would advise that initially you get your vet to trim them, and they can show you how. If your dog has pale nails, you will be able to see the quick through the nail. If you accidently cut into this it will bleed, but in most cases it will bleed for a short time, then that will be the end of it, no worries. It does however hurt the dog if you cut into the quick though, so it's good to be careful. There's no need to trim nails unless they become excessively long, that is probably much more than 5mm past the quick. I have never had to trim any of my dogs nails simply because walking along the seafront on the concrete and the sand wears them down sufficiently. If the nails do become too long it can twist the joints and cause all sorts of problems, but by simply posting this question you have demonstrated to me that you know to keep an eye out for the nails in the first place! oh ps dog groomers can also trim the nails for you

This is easy to do with hand-held dog nail clippers. You can buy these almost anywhere. Just make sure you buy a good quality pair that are sharp and won't don't dull too quickly. Also, don't cut too close to the quick (the part where it turns pinkish red) or else there will be blood. Some dogs only yelp at close cuttings and others refuse to let you touch them again so be careful! You can also buy a type of power that is called Quick Stop, which you can sprinkle on the toe that you clipped too close to stop bleeding fast and the loss of blood if you are going to cut at home. This is good to have on hand just in case. Yet, if your dog is a fear bitter, one who is terrified of even the sight of clippers, if your dog's nail's quick (that pink part) is hard to see because your dogs nails are black, or if you just want the best cut possible, your best bet would be to take him to the grommer. The groomers will use muzzles that can keep your dog from bitting them if your dog starts to get uncomfortable about it and their clippers are top-quality so you know the cut will be a good one. Cuts range from about 7 to 10 dollars at the groomers but they all have the same outcome, so going with the cheapest one is just fine. A groomer can also do something called a nail grind on your dog's nails. This just grinds off the part of the nails that was going to be cut. Nails grinds are a little more expensive than a cut, but only but a few dollars. I would suggest the grind though because the groomer rounds the edges of the nail so they will stay smooth all the way around, unlike a cut. The grind also keeps your dogs nails shorter longer because the nails are smoothed out and sealed and not left exposed to grow longer. I know this was a long comment, but I hope it helps!

Oh, I know how you feel. First of all, if you have a small dog/ puppy, you can use small human nail clippers. **Just remember there is a long vein that runs almost to the end of the nail and you don't want to cut there --if you do, there is a special powder you can buy to help control the bleeding. I actually just bought some dog nail clippers that come with the powder that stops the bleeding at Petsmart. **My dog will not cooperate with nail clipping so I have to wrap him up in a towel so only one paw is out. Then I have a friend hold his head while I clip --it is so hard. My dog growls, and makes ugly noises every time. Good luck! I told the vet tech at my vet's office (he had a vaccination appointment) how hard it was to trim my puppy's nails and she showed me how to do it. Then she took him to the place where they give the shots and took care of it (and all the other stuff he needs). So maybe your vet can help you! Good luck.

take them for a walk or a run on a not so busy road the concrete will file the nail down also you can go buy dog nail clippers and some powder(not for sure the name should be on the same ile or just ask) and trim a little at a time don't trim to much you can nick some vein in the nail and they can bleed tremendously if they do that's what the powder is for just dip nail in the powder this a 2 man or woman job.

If your dog won't hold still long enough for you to trim them, don't try. The dog could jerk just as you're clipping and cause you to clip to low. It's an easy fix with styptic powder or pen but it could scare the dog even more to not trust you to do it again. I accidentally clipped one of my Lab pups quick last week when she jerked and the styptic powder stopped it at once, luckily it didn't even bother her or at least she didn't show it. I bought some clippers at Wal-Mart for $5.99 that have a guard behind the clipper. If the nails are extremely long, only put the nail to the guard and clip. If they are very long, you don't want to trim off all at once anyway if they've been that way for some time - according to my vet. The best bet is to take him to the groomer for a nail trim (PetSmart does it for $7 or so) and they can show you exactly how to do it and where not to clip past. The quick can be very hard to see if the nails are black. Good luck!

You Will Have To Purchase" DOG NAIL CLIPPERS" And BE Very Carefull Not To Cut Into The Quick Of The Nail . IF You Do IT Will Bleed And It Is Also Very Painfull For The Dog.. You Should Ask Your " DOG Groomer" To Show You How To Do It.. Especially IF The Nails Are BLACK..

ok get a dog nail clipper and clip a little before you see the red part below is a drawing of the nail ( sorta) the __ equal the
outside the > equals the blood or the red part the ) equals the end end of the nail .. you're supposed to clip between the red part and the end if you're not sure where the nail ends then clip more towards the beginning if you clip too far in the nail will bleed so be careful!!!! if this happens as it sometimes will then ( i mean if the nail bleeds) stick it in baking soda, a bar of soap but you have to dig the nail in it so the soap help stops it or put it agianst a tea bag
(nail)

If you have a dog toe nail clipper, make sure to not clip off too much nail at once or you'll hit their vein (and the dog will freak out). If you do hit a vein, they sell this stypic pen in pharmacies to stop the bleeding. I have to get my dog on the ground and clip his nails that way, or else he'll run away. I never clipped his vein or anything. He's just a fraidy cat. Clip very conservatively. Eventually some dogs get used to it and don't freak.

I believe it is very dangerous to trim a dogs nails yourself. There are blood vesels inside the dogs nails and it could cause a lot of bleeding if it isn't done right.
