For highlighted hair you first have to fill your hair with a demi- permanent color dye (a demi color is not a permanent color dye, it contains no ammonia). After filling in the color with a demi, then you could color your friends hair with a permanent color dye. This process achieves a better result for the highlighted hair not to fade.
But if your friend changes her mind about her hair color for every season, I just suggest just to color her hair with a demi permanent color it lasts up to 8 weeks...just a suggestion its not as damaging as a permanent color dye ...hair could only take so much before breaking off (it's called a chemical hair cut).

It won't become lighter but after washes the darker dye will eventually fade off of the highlighted hair. This is because the highlighted part of your hair, had melonin taken out when it was highlighted. Your only option is to wait for the hair to grow and cut off the highlighted part or keep dying it every couple of weeks to keep the highlighted hair from showing through the dark hair.

wait. so you think your light hair will turn lighter if you dye it a darker color than even your original hair? which is already darker than the highlights. ok thats confusing. of course the highlighted parts wont become lighter if you dye it darker. It'll still be lighter than the un-highlighted hair.

uhhh how would the highlights become lighter?
the darker dye will make all of your hair one solid dark color, it wont keep the highlights in at all

Yes,the color will wash out on the highlighted part quicker because it's more porous than the rest of the hair.
