So when did you join the car police?
How is it any different from a single person buying a four door? Or buying a station wagon when you never need to haul anything in the back of IT? If you're one of those environmentalist whack-jobs who think of pickups and wasteful, may I be the first to point out that compact pickups (the Ford Ranger springs to mind) get better gas mileage than most passenger cars?
I drive a pickup because in the rural area I live in, there is no trash pickup...you have to haul your own trash to the dump. That's why everyone here has trucks.

Keep in mind all the people who live in Northern climates (like myself) who can't make do with any old car in wintertime (not to mention rust - it's a whole lot cheapter to replace the bed/rear quarter panels on a truck than the entire body on a unibody car). In the area me and my friends live in, even an All-Wheel Drive car or light SUV like a Subaru, Mitsubishi, or a Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4 won't cut it because the snow is too deep, the mud too thick, and the sand too, uh, sandy. The graders only plow the roads after almost every other road in the county has been done at least three times.
My family has always had at least one truck in the driveway, and it's always been put to good use hauling stuff from various lumberyards, woods, house-to-house, etc. The 4-Wheel Drive has been put to the test many times too.
The only thing I don't agree with is when I go to the city and see little old ladies attempting to drive Chevrolet Suburbans, Ford Excursions, and big, crew-cab, diesel-powered trucks. It's very entertaining trying to watch them merge in traffic, park at the store, and try to see over the steering wheel.
If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask.

Not really. Some people like the ride & feel of a truck, as well as the general appearance & strength. It's important to note that among 4 wheel drive & off-road type vehicle owners, nearly 90% never take their vehicles off-road. A lot of people buy 5 or 6 passenger cars & never have passengers. And I'm pretty sure that among Hummer owners, principally a military vehicle, most never take their Hummers to war.
People overwhelmingly buy their transportation for one single reason: how they look to others when they are in them and not for what the vehicle can or cannot do.

Well, if you buy a truck and do not use it, I would say that is a personal choice. Personally, every truck I have owned has earned its place in the driveway, and has the scratched bed to prove it. Now once I am done helping my dad build up our old 55 Chevy 3100, it will most definitely not be hauling anything in it because by that time it will be a street rod.

Well, the same thing can be asked of a guy who buys a car that will run 160 mph. He or she didn't buy it for the express purpose of driving it that fast. But they could, provided there was a proper place like a track to do so. But that isn't the reason for buying it.
What people buy is a personal choice.
I know lots of people that own pickups simply because they like pickups and not for the purpose of hauling anything particularly.

What is your lifestyle and how a car handles the way you like is not everybody else...consider this, a crew cab has got the same space as any sedan your much higher of the ground with no blind spots in front of you and dont have to worry what fits in the trunk... if you ever have an accident your chances of injury is much less...now would I buy one, hell no I like the smooth ride, to each his own...

if the person driving the truck is happy with their truck, who am i to judge that person for driving what makes them happy? i once saw a VW new beetle painted PLAID. the owner had a big smile on his face, so i guess it made him feel better to drive it. if poeple only drove what made You happy, the whole world would probably be in a prius or a yaris or something. enjoy and embrace diversity!!!!!!!
