the so called "winter nose" that some dogs exhibit is due to a decreased production of melanin granules in the basal skin layer. As the ultraviolet rays of the sun diminish with the onset of winter, or as is more likely the case, as the dog spends more time indoors shielded from the sun's rays.
more exposur to the sun in the spring will bring the color back. it's not a tan like we tan. dogs don't tan, they burn. But the melanin granules give the nose it's color.

I do not know the anatomical reason for the pink nose, but it is due to the cold. I have always heard it called "snow nose." My Golden's nose also gets pink. When I was younger, I had Alaskan Malamutes. During the winter, their noses would turn almost completely pink.
Note to answer above mine...stainless steel bowls are better/cleaner for dogs. Plastic bowls accumulate more bacteria.

A Maltese's nose should be black. I'd be more concerned about the weight loss.

like lots of people said before its probably just because of the cold but my dog got a chunk taken out of his nose (a small one, and by a log too, haha poor clumsy pup) and now he has a little pinkish white splotch where the wound was, but i think its probably the snow nose thing

Some breeds do get "winter nose" which is just temporary. Once it starts to get warmer their nose will be black again. Some dogs also just lose pigment -They say that kelp added to the diet can help.
hope this helps!
