Take the second equation and solve for x. Then substitute the result for x in the 1st equation. This will give you an equation with nothing but y, which you can then solve.

y=3x-4
3x-4 = 2x^2 -4x -8
2x^2-7x -4=0
(2x +1)(x-4) = 0
2x+1=0 --> x= 1/2
x-4 = 0 --> x = 4
x = 1/2 or x = 4
