You don't need to do anything extreme like shaving her hair off or holding her down and forcing her to get brushed. Take her to a groomer and ask that the groomer clip down her stomach area and insides of her legs. She does not need to be shaved to the skin! Just short enough that the matted areas are off. The groomer can then scissor to blend the short hair into the longer hair and comb your cat all over to get the dead hair and tangles out of the coat. Now that the hair is free of mats, you can comb her (not brush) and since you won't be pulling on tangles because the groomer already took them out, your cat will get used to being combed. There is no need to frequently bathe the cat as you will only dry out her skin. Just keep a grooming schedule of every 3-4 months, and comb as often as you can. Your cat could learn to enjoy being combed if you make it a nice calm experience. Good luck!

I like Cosmo. I had a gray kitty with that name. I got it from an old B&W movie called "Topper". The lead living character's name was Cosmo. There are 2 ghosts (Cary Grant plays one). Not sure about a middle name.

Dorian Gray. It's a character from a very interesting novel, but it's the name that came to me when I saw your question.
